Chevrolet Malibu system active shutter automatically closes the air by opening a lower consumption when the air supply is less necessary. When closed, the sealing system improves aerodynamic performance by redirecting the air around the front and sides of the vehicle, instead of through it. The shutter is open or closed depends on engine coolant temperature and speed - for example, the flaps open when the car is going uphill, pulling a trailer or driving in city heat blinds closed at highway speeds, when engine cooling is less necessary.

It is estimated that the engine will be certified in over 190 SAE horsepower (141 kW) and 180 lb.-ft. of torque (245 Nm). Noise reduction of the new engine has features such as cast iron exhaust manifold, steel crankshaft, chains, low noise and mounting time to help direct the cabin quiet experience.

The 2.5-liter is mated to a Hydra-Matic 6T40 six-speed automatic transmission with features designed to improve the efficiency of the powertrain. They include changes to the clutch and equipment that improves the response and the switching time. These changes have allowed engineers to specify a higher leverage to improve efficiency while maintaining cruise performance acceleration and handling.
